Instructions

  1. Inside

    • 1

Dress your toddler in a pair of long pants. Choose pants that allow her to ease of movement, yet will keep her warm.

    • 2

Put layers on the toddler's upper body. Dress the toddler in two or three layers of lightweight, long-sleeve shirts. While one heavy, long-sleeve garment may keep the child warm, it can cause him to overheat. Layers of loose-fitting, lightweight garments will keep your child warm while allowing him to remove layers if he becomes too warm.

    • 3

Cover the toddler's feet with socks and shoes. Use socks that extend past the ankle.

    Outside

    • 4

Dress the child in an insulted coat and pants. Choose wind- and waterproof items that will keep the toddler warm and dry on windy, snowy days.

    • 5

Wrap a scarf snugly, but not tightly, around the neck of the child. Tuck the ends of the scarf into the child's coat to avoid a choking hazard.

    • 6

Cover the toddler's head with a hat. Use a hat that fits snugly, yet is large enough to cover the child's ears. Alternatively, pull a hood over the child's head and tie it under her chin.

    • 7

Protect the child's hands with gloves or mittens. In extremely cold weather, put two pairs of gloves or mittens on the toddler's hands. Use waterproof gloves or mittens in snowy weather.

    • 8

Cover the child's feet with shoes and socks. Use socks that extend past the ankle. In snowy or wet weather, trade shoes in for a pair of insulated, waterproof, slip-proof boots that extend past the child's ankle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use materials that are warm and comfortable, such as cotton, fleece or flannel. Avoid materials that may be itchy and uncomfortable, such as wool.

  • Change the toddler's clothing often if it becomes wet.
