How to Cut New Growth Off of Old Grapevines
The new growths on old grapevines are called “cuttings” and can be taken any time after the vines have lost their leaves and before they begin to bud. Cutting a new growth off an old grape vine can then be used to start a new vine. The procedure requires a few tools that are common and not specialized for use with grapevines. Measure 14 inches out from the base of the new growth (or shoot) growing from the old grapevine. Make a mark on the shoot with a pencil. Measure an additional 1 inch out from the bud closest to the mark made. Make an X at this new measurement. Squeeze the length of the shoot from the base to the X with your fingers to confirm that it is neither soft or spongy.
