Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the shape you want to paint on your wall with a pencil. Do this lightly so that the pencil marks can be easily removed.

    • 2

Place painter's tape along the edge of the sketched outline so that it forms the shape. You may need to use many small pieces of tape rather than one long piece if the design is circular or curved.

    • 3

Sand the area inside of the painter's tape in preparation for the new coat of paint. Do not over sand, but sand just enough so the surface of the painted wall is scuffed up. This will make it easier for the new paint to bond to the surface.

    • 4

Clean the sanding dust from the wall with a dust cloth and then apply a coat of paint with your paint roller. Don't go all the way to the edge of the tape. Instead, paint the bulk of the area and paint the edges with your paintbrush to remain inside the tape lines.

    • 5

Wait for the paint to dry and then apply a second and third coat as needed to achieve a uniform texture and appearance inside of the painter's tape.

    • 6

Remove the painter's tape once the paint has dried. Use a small paintbrush to touch up any mistakes or unpainted areas you might have.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may wish to use stencils when drawing the original shape. Stencils are prefabricated design guides that you can place against the wall and trace with a pencil to achieve the desired shape.
