Dishwashers require leveling when installing them under the counter. If the dishwasher is out of level, water sits at the low point. Eventually, the standing water causes odors, and attracts mold and mildew. Most people know to level the dishwasher side-to-side once it is under the counter. However, it is essential that you level the dishwasher front-to-back before sliding it into place. Leveling the dishwasher front-to-back ensures that the unit fits under the counter properly.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Nut driver
- Adjustable wrench
- Socket wrench
- Tape measure
Position the dishwasher in front of the opening under the counter. The rear of the dishwasher should be facing the cabinets.
Remove the screws that secure the lower access panel in the front of the dishwasher with a Phillips-head screwdriver or nut driver. Pull the access panel away from the dishwasher. The top of the stems on the leveling feet might have a hole for a socket wrench. Some models have feet that are hex shape, requiring an adjustable wrench to turn them for adjustment.
Measure the opening under the counter between the floor and bottom of the counter with a tape measure. Measure rear of the dishwasher from the floor to the top of the dishwasher. The rear of the dishwasher should be one-half inch lower than the opening height.
Find the adjustment area for the rear legs or rollers. Some dishwashers have an adjustment screw on the rear. Other models simply allow for turning the hex feet with an adjustable wrench. Adjust the rear legs or rollers up or down as necessary until the height is correct.
Open the door to the dishwasher and pull out the bottom dish rack. Turn the lower spray arm so that it is pointing front to back. Place a level on the bottom of the dishwasher beside the spray arm.
Adjust the front legs up or down as necessary with the adjustable wrench or socket wrench until the front is level with the back. Check the opposite side of the dishwasher with the level, and adjust as necessary.
