Create one or more coordinating tablecloths for your home.

Tablecloths add elegance and panache to a round, square or rectangle table. Whether you are covering up the table to conceal scuffs and scratches or you want to protect the table during dinners, a tablecloth is your solution. While you can purchase a custom-made tablecloth for your table, they are often expensive and can take several weeks to receive. Creating your own tablecloth is an uncomplicated procedure that requires little sewing skills and minimal time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of a round tablecloth. To get the diameter, measure the table directly through the center, like you are cutting the table in half. This is the diameter. For a square or rectangle table, measure the height and width. Write down the measurements.

    • 2

Hold the tape measure at the edge of the table and measure downwards to determine the drop. The drop is the amount of fabric that hangs off the edge of the table. Most drops are at least 5 inches; this ensures the edge of the table will not show. Informal drops are 8 inches and formal drops are 15 inches. Double the drop measurement you want to add.

    • 3

Add the drop number to the diameter or height and width measurements. For instance, if the diameter of a round table is 50 inches and you want to add an informal drop, then your measurement will be 66 inches. If a rectangle table is 60 inches by 40 inches then double the drop to each measurement. Add the drop measurement to the square measurements similar to the rectangle measurement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Novice sewers may want to add additional inches to allow for mistakes.
