Draw a simple symmetrical heart in Illustrator.

The heart shape has been used as a symbol of love and affection since ancient times. If you want to create a logo or design including a heart using Adobe Illustrator CS5, however, you face a challenge, because Illustrator doesn't include a heart in its shapes tool. To create a heart, you need to draw it manually, using the reflect tool to make sure it's symmetrical.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Illustrator and create a new document.

    • 2

Click the "View" menu and select "Show Grid." This displays a grid in the background of your document.

    • 3

Press "P" to activate the pen tool.

    • 4

Draw the left half of a heart using the pen tool, using the grid as a guideline to align the bottom anchor point of the half heart exactly underneath the top anchor point.

    • 5

Press "O" to activate the reflect tool.

    • 6

Hold down the "Alt" key and click on the bottom anchor point of the half heart to bring up the reflect tool options.

    • 7

Select the "Vertical" option under the "Axis" grouping and click "Copy." This creates a second half-heart shape, a mirror image of the half heart you've drawn.

    • 8

Press "V" to activate the selection tool.

    • 9

Select both halves of the heart using the selection tool.

    • 10

Press "Shift" and "M" to activate the shape builder tool.

    • 11

Click the left half of the heart and drag to the right half to join them.
