How to Use Python Framework on 1&1

You can use the Python programming language to write applications that run over the Internet but your Web hosting server -- the server on which your website files reside -- must have Python installed in order to run the application. As long as your Web server has Python installed any individual visiting your site does not need to have Python installed on her computer. The Web host 1&1 includes Python on many of its Web hosting account plans.

Things You'll Need

  • 1&1 Web Hosting Account
  • Look at the 1&1 plans page to confirm your 1&1 Web hosting plan includes Python. As of October 2011 the "Unlimited" and "Business" plans include Python but "Individual" does not.

  • Download the PuTTY software program to connect to your Web hosting account over ssh.

  • Type your website domain in the "Host Name" box.

  • Select "SSH" as the connection type.

  • Click "Data" under "Connection" in the tree on the left.

  • Type your 1&1 username in the "Auto-Login Username" box.

  • Click "Session" in the directory tree on the left.

  • Click the "Open" button to connect to your account. Enter your password when prompted.

  • Type "whereis python" without the quotation marks at the command prompt. The response will be the path to Python for your Web hosting account.

  • Insert the following line as the first line of your Python script:

Change this line as necessary to reflect the exact Python path you found in step nine if it differs. Your Python scripts now run on 1&1.
