How to Make a Home Theater System Play Regular TV

If you have a new home theater system, you will want to set it up so that it can play surround sound from your regular TV, and not just from accessories like your DVD player. Some older TVs do not have the necessary options to switch to different sound outputs. However, on newer sets you can play sound through your home theater system.

Plug one end of your audio cables into the "Audio Out" jacks on your TV. The cables and plugs are color-coded red and white. Plug the red cable in the red jack and the white cable in the white jack.

Plug the other end of the audio cables into the corresponding "Audio In" jacks on the home theater system.

Press "Menu" on your TV's remote control, and navigate through the menu system to find the "Sound" menu where you can change the TV sound output. Change it to "Dolby" or "Surround."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a cable or satellite receiver, you may also need to change sound settings in its menu.
