Instructions

      Start in the center of the beret by chaining four stitches and joining the last stitch to the first stitch with a slip stitch, forming a circle. Chain three. Insert the hook into the circle and make a double crochet stitch. Make 12 more double crochet stitches into the circle. Join the last double crochet to the third chain from the beginning of the circle with a slip stitch.

      Chain three. Make two double crochet stitches in the top of each double crochet from the previous row, for a total of 28 double crochets in the round. Join the circle with a slip stitch. Chain three for the third row. Make one double crochet stitch in the top of the first stitch and two double crochets in the next stitch. Continue alternating one double crochet and then two double crochets for the remaining stitches in this row. End with a slip stitch and a total of 42 double crochets.

      Chain three to start the fourth row. Make one double crochet stitch in each of the first two stitches. Make two double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern of alternating two double crochets in two stitches followed by two double crochets in each of the following two stitches until the row is completed with a slip stitch, for a total of 56 stitches in the row.

      Chain three to start the fifth row. Make three double crochet stitches in the first three stitches, then two double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern for every four stitches around the row for a total of 70 stitches. Chain three for the start of the sixth row. Make four double crochet stitches in the first four stitches, then two double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern for every five stitches around the row for a total of 84 stitches.

Tips & Warnings

  • This pattern produces a beret with a diameter of 11 inches at the crown. If a larger or smaller beret is desire, increase or decrease the size of the hook used accordingly.

  • If desired, a decorative brooch or crocheted flower can be attached to the beret.

  • Make a test swatch before you begin this project to determine the gauge of your crocheting to ensure the correct size of beret.
