DIY: Xtracycle Rack
Xtracycles are recreational bikes with an elongated rear section for storing cargo. This modification allows Xtracycle users to carry various items on the back of the bike with relative ease. You can create your own rack for carrying flat items such as pizza boxes along the top of the bike’s rear section. Creating this modification is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in less than 30 minutes.

1
Search the internet for a “Snapdeck” template, download it onto your computer and print it out. Align and tape the two pages together with clear tape.
-
2
Center the template over the gorm shelf, with the top edge of the template placed against the edge of the gorm shelf. Make sure the holes on the template are as close to the center of the first and last planks on the shelf as possible.
-
-
3
Secure the template onto the shelf with masking tape. Drill a 0.1875-inch hole through the marked holes on the template and through the shelf itself. Remove the template afterwards.
-
4
Insert a bolt for the “SnapHook” foot through the top of the shelf. Thread the bolt onto the “SnapHook” foot, with the toe and foot of the hook facing outwards. Repeat the procedure to install the three remaining “SnapHook” feet.
-
5
Flip the shelf over and measure the center-to-center distance for the posts on the lansa bar with measuring tape. Line up the mid-point of the measured distance to the middle of the plank. Drill a hole at each end of the plank for the lansa bar mount.
-
6
Insert the lansa bar into the holes and secure it with two screws. Tighten the screws with an electric drill and Phillips screwdriver bit.
-
7
Mount the rack onto the back of the Xtracycle by pressing one side of the “SnapHooks” against the inner edge of the V-rack on the bike. Rotate the rack down until the hooks snap against the V-racks.
