How to Make a Fade Effect When Painting Ceramic

Painting your ceramics adds color and vitality to them. Some people paint ceramics they have made, but you can also paint ceramics you have purchased. This might be a simple project like painting the feathers on a ceramic bird or the black nose on a ceramic teddy bear. For something more abstract and impressive, create a color gradient that fades slowly into the color of the ceramic.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose two or more colors for the faded paint; one color should be white.

    • 2

Dip your brush in your darkest paint. Go to the point on the ceramic object where you want the dark part of the gradient to begin. Paint a line across – not with – the direction you want the gradient to go.

    • 3

Dip another brush in the next darkest color and paint another line directly below the previous one. Continue this process of adding lighter lines until you draw the white line.

    • 4

Dip the sponge in water and squeeze out the majority of the water so it is slightly damp. Use the sponge to blend the lines of paint. Let the paint dry.
