How to Adjust a Wind-Up Clock

Wind-up clocks are generally spring-driven and wound by either a permanently installed key or a key that is inserted at the time of winding. As the clock springs steadily wind down, the torque, or power, delivered to the time mechanism decreases and makes the clock run slower. A lever is provided to adjust the time of the clock and to enable it to run faster or slower. You can adjust your wind-up clock to keep better time with no special skills required. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the time adjustment lever on the back of the wind-up clock. The lever protrudes out from a slotted hole.

    • 2

Check the symbols on either side of the slot. The symbols will be “F” on one end and “S” on the other -- or “A” and “R.” "F" represents fast and "S" is slow, while "A" is advance and "R" is retard.

    • 3

Move the lever either right or left as necessary to the center position with your finger. This is a starting point for further adjustments.

    • 4

Move the lever slightly toward the "Fast" or "Advance" side from the center. Since the power depletes as the spring unwinds, the clock has a tendency to run slower as the day progresses.

    • 5

Wind up the clock’s spring fully, and set it to the correct time. Allow the clock to operate for 12 hours, and check the clock’s accuracy against a digital clock or watch.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until you achieve greater accuracy.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the wind-up clock has a pendulum, turning the rating nut at the bottom of the pendulum counterclockwise decreases the clock speed. Conversely, turning the nut clockwise increases the speed. The rating nut is turned by hand.
