Follow your sorority's dress code.

College is a great time to focus on your goals and objectives, meet new people and share ideas. Membership in a sorority helps you navigate the protocols of college and social customs. Soirees introduce you to new friends, forces you to confront fashion essentials and present your attributes in an attractive manner. For your soiree, you’ll want to put your best self forward and shine.

Instructions

Read your invitation and understand the suggested dress code if there is one. If it says formal attire, which most soirees are, follow and adhere to the specific regulations that have been set forward by your sorority. If it says “no cleavage,” then do not buy a dress with a plunging neckline; if it says medium-height heels, wear medium-height heels. Part of the sorority experience is to learn what is acceptable and follow the rules of conduct in a particular part of society. Your sorority soiree is not the time to rebel.

Visit a department store, enlist a friend’s or store assistant’s aid and determine the colors that look best on you. Hold up to your face, or try on, many different colors of outfits. If your facial features brighten and have a healthy glow when wearing a certain color, that is the color you should choose for soiree outfit. Monochromatic dressing makes the wearer appear taller and slimmer than they are.

Analyze your body type and determine what is the best cut of clothing for you to wear. This all takes time but everyone should know what cuts of clothes look best on them. If you are extremely thin and tall, what you wear will be entirely different than what a short, full-bodied woman would wear. One might comfortably wear 4-inch heels with a body-hugging gown while you may opt for flats and a fuller skirt to add the appearance of more curves to your body.

Select a ball gown according to the sorority’s suggested dress code. The more formal the occasion, the longer the dress length can be. Ball gowns are the most formal type of dress and generally have wide skirts suitable for dancing. Evening gowns are full-length and can have a more fitted skirt. Ballet or tea gowns are mid-calf to ankle length while cocktail dresses hit just above or below the knee. Cocktail dresses can be worn for semi-formal events while tea or ballet dresses are appropriate for formal daytime events.

Select a matching purse and shoes that blend well with your dress. Choose shoes for the occasion; make sure you can dance in them if there is to be dancing.

Select earrings, necklace and bracelets that will coordinate with your dress. Sophisticated clothing is enhanced by gold or silver accessories. A dash of gemstone to match your dress will have you attending the soiree with confidence.
