Decorate your living room with bright streamers and balloons for the baby shower.

As friends and family move away, technology allows people to continue seeing one another as if face-to-face. With video calls, you can even plan a virtual party for an expecting mother who lives far away for a surprise baby shower. Even if one or more of your guests live a long distance from your home, you can set up a program that allows for video conferences, such as Skype. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Design invitations around the virtual party idea. Host the party at your house and settle on a date and time that is suitable beforehand. Prepare guests for the surprise by calling before you send out the invitations in the mail. Include the date, time and what to bring to the virtual party, such as gifts or props, like a diaper cake.

    • 2

Set up a webcam in your living room or near the center of your party. Decorate with banners and balloons with a baby shower theme, such as pastel pink or blue items. Set up a table off to the side for guests to place gifts and place multiple chairs within range of the web cam.

    • 3

Send an email or talk to the mommy beforehand about doing a video call with you on the day of the surprise party. Use programs like Skype, ooVoo or FaceFlow to set up the video call. Download and install before the party, and practice using the video feature.

Plan games to play with your virtual new mommy and guests at your home, such as "Making a Baby." With a bunch of magazines, cut out different eyes, heads, noses and mouths. Glue the pieces together to show the mom what they think the baby will look like.

    • 5

Turn the webcam away from the party area toward a blank wall after all the guests arrive. Invite the honorary baby shower mom to the video call on your selected program. After a few minutes of conversation, pretend to get a phone call and walk out of the cam's frame, then scream out. Get everyone together at the party and jump back into frame, shouting "Surprise" and "Congratulations." Turn the cam around to face the party scene that you created.

Read cards and open presents for the mom. After each guest gives a gift, place smaller items into a large mailing box off to the side with bigger items to be mailed separately. You can draw a large stork on the side or decorate the box with stickers to celebrate the new baby.
