A high-sodium diet can cause your body to retain fluids. This triggers bloating and swelling, which can be uncomfortable at times. Fortunately, there are ways to reverse or get rid of bloating associated with salt intake. Additionally, losing fluid from salt can trigger a reduction in weight as your body flushes out excess sodium and water.
Drink extra fluids to remove sodium from your body. Increasing your fluid intake stimulates urination, which is key to flushing out extra sodium and reducing swelling. Water is best because water does not contain salt. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily.
Elevate lower body. If too much sodium causes swelling in the legs or feet, prop your legs on a pillow to keep this area elevated above the heart. Elevation increases blood circulation and helps reduce fluid retention and swelling in the lower extremities.
Take an over-the-counter diuretic. Nonprescrption diuretics stimulate urination and help reduce swelling from salt. Speak with a doctor if you take other medications, or if you have a medical condition. Take medication as labeled.
Curb your sodium intake and reduce your consumption to no more than 2,300 mg a day. The less salt you eat, the sooner your body can recover and reverse swelling.
Eat more fruits and vegetables. Select fruits with a high water content to help expel extra water and get rid of swelling. Options include watermelon, cucumbers and celery.
Wear loose fitting clothes. Certain types of clothing, such as pantyhose, tight jeans and spandex can decrease blood circulation and increase swelling.
