How to Do Hair Twisties for Kids
Hair twisties are hair ties that hold long strands of hair together to form a ponytail. Girls love these decorative hair accessories, especially when they are decorated with favorite characters or colorful images. A hair twistie can be created in many different ways. One of these is using a needle, thread and stuffing to create a poofy, three-dimensional twistie. This twistie will rest on the girl's ponytail and stand out from the head, be able to be washed in the washing machine, and it will last longer than tied homemade twisties, which often come unraveled.

1
Draw a pattern on a piece of paper. This will be the template for the twistie. Draw characters, shapes, images or any other type of design for the twistie. Keep the shape small in scale, such as 3 inches high by 1-inch wide.
-
2
Trace the pattern on to both pieces of felt. Cut out the felt using sharp scissors. Dull scissors will pull on the felt fibers and tear the pattern rather than cutting clean lines. Set one piece of patterned felt aside.

3
Add various decorations to the front of the felt, which will be the top of the twistie. For example, a character decoration will need eyes and a smile; use small beads to create two eyes and a wide smile. Sew the decorations on to the felt with a needle and thread, pulling the needle from under the felt, through the decoration, then back through the felt. Create knots on the back of the felt.
-
4
Cut a quarter-inch rectangle of felt to attach to the patterned felt that was set aside. Sew one end of the rectangle to the back of the felt pattern. Slip the two hair bands under the rectangle so they stand straight up from the felt. Sew the other end of the rectangle, sealing the hair bands onto the felt.
-
5
Line up the felt patterns so the side with the hair bands and the side with the decorations are facing out. Use a buttonhole stitch to attach the felt patterns to each other, leaving a quarter-inch opening on one side of the decoration. This hole is for the cotton stuffing.
-
6
Fill the hole with cotton stuffing. Use the needle and thread to close the hole with a buttonhole stitch and finish the hair twistie.
