DIY Classical Guitar Hanger

Classical and flamenco guitars have specific dimensions, different from other styles

Acoustic guitars can be delicate instruments. Their hollow bodies are made of thin wooden panels that can easily be cracked or punctured by a slight knock. To protect their guitars, players hang their instruments on a wall . However, standard hangers may not fit the classical guitar because of its broad nut width (located where the headstock ends and the fretboard begins). You can solve this problem by building your own hanger for your classical guitar.

Things You'll Need

  • Block of hardwood, 6 inches by 4 inches by 2 inches
  • 2 sections of hardwood dowel, each 3 inches long and 1/4-inch thick
  • Drill with 1/4-inch bit
  • Masking tape
  • Wood glue
  • Wooden mallet
  • Neoprene sports tape

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the guitar down on a work surface. Position the block under the point where the neck flares into the headstock. The block should be at a right angle to the strings, so roughly 2 inches of it are visible either side of the neck.

    • 2

Stand the two dowel rods on either side of the headstock, and mark the points where they meet the wood block. Remove the block from under the guitar and measure the distance between the two marks.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the marks to the edges of the block to ensure that they are equidistant. If they are off-center, flip the block over, and re-mark them.

    • 4

Set the depth gauge on the drill to one-inch deep, or measure an inch from the tip of the drill and wrap a strip of tape around it.

    • 5

Drill a hole on each of the dowel marks, one inch deep. Dab a spot of glue onto the end of each dowel, and tap them into the holes using the mallet.

    • 6

Allow at least an hour for the glue on the dowels to dry. Wrap a piece of sports tape around each one to protect the neck finish. Your hanger is now ready to be mounted to the wall.
