How to Transfer From Ubuntu to Windows in VirtualBox

VirtualBox includes a VirtualBox Guest Additions package that you can install inside virtual machines. VirtualBox Guest Additions enable a variety of features, including enhanced video performance, copy-and-paste integration and shared folders. You can use shared folders to share a folder on your Ubuntu system with the Windows virtual machine. The shared folder appears as its own drive letter in the Windows virtual machine. You can transfer files from Ubuntu to Windows or from Windows to Ubuntu by copying them to the shared folder.

Instructions

    • 1

Boot the Windows virtual machine in VirtualBox.

    • 2

Click the “Devices” menu at the top of the Windows virtual machine window and select “Mount CD/DVD-ROM.” The Virtual Media Manager window appears.

    • 3

Click the “Add” button, browse to the “/opt/VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso” file and double-click it. If you installed VirtualBox to a directory other than /opt/VirtualBox, browse to the “VBoxGuestAdditions.iso” file in the other directory instead.

    • 4

Click the “VBoxGuestAdditions.iso” file that appears in the Virtual Media Manager window and click “Select” to mount it in your Windows virtual machine.

    • 5

Complete the VirtualBox Guest Additions installer that automatically starts in your virtual machine. If you have AutoRun disabled, browse to the disc drive in the virtual machine and double-click the “VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe” file on it to start the installer.

    • 6

Restart Windows to activate the VirtualBox Guest Additions after the installation completes.

    • 7

Click the “Devices” menu at the top of the virtual machine’s window and select “Shared Folders.”

    • 8

Click the “Add” button at the right side of the list of shared folders. Specify a location by clicking the “Folder Path” box, selecting “Other” and browsing to a folder you want to share on your Linux file system. Provide a name for the share by typing it into the Folder Name box, click the “Auto-mount” check box and click “OK” twice to save your settings.

    • 9

Click “Start” inside your virtual machine and click “Computer.” The shared folder has its own drive letter in the Computer window. You can transfer files between virtual machines by copying them to the folder you shared on the Linux file system or the shared folder’s drive letter inside the Windows virtual machine.
