1
Prepare the room to be painted. Remove all of the furniture and lay drop cloth throughout the room.
-
2
Tape off the trim with painter's tape. Make sure you get every corner and edge. Painter's tape will create a sharp lined edge as you paint.

3
Sand the trim with sandpaper if you need to remove old paint. The type of sandpaper depends on the surface and the amount of old paint that you are removing. From an efficiency standpoint, sand the trim before you paint because you want to get all of the prep work out of the way before painting. Wipe the trim with a wet cloth to remove the debris.
-
4
Tape off the edge of the trim with your painter's tape so that you can paint the wall right up against it.
-
5
Paint the wall along the edge of the trim with a small brush or roller to have better control. After you have painted around the areas near the trim, start working on the main portion of the wall. Remove the tape when the paint has dried.
-
6
Tape off the wall edge with your painter's tape against the trim so all of the trim is exposed. Slowly paint the trim with a small brush or roller. The brush or roller should be at least half the size of the trim. This will make it easier to control and paint along the edge. Remove the tape when the paint has dried.
