How to Clean the Grime Under a Watch Bezel
Though most people today use their cellular phones to monitor the time, wristwatch enthusiasts prefer to track it the old-fashioned way. Wristwatches go with you everywhere, which means that they can quickly collect an impressive amount of grime. Though your watch's bezel, or glass face, may appear clean, it is likely hiding a significant amount of dirt. With some basic cleaning supplies and a steady hand, you can restore your watch's bezel to like-new condition.
Things You'll Need
- Case knife (optional)

1
Inspect your watch's outer casing, as this will determine how you will remove the bezel. Most wristwatches have a number of slits or notches around the casing's circumference. These allow for the insertion of a case knife, a tool made specifically for removing the bezel.
-
2
Wedge the dull, rounded side of the case knife into the slit. Depress the opposite end of the knife gently to pry up the casing. Repeat for each slit until the casing is free from the watch and the bezel is accessible.

3
Place the bezel, inside facing up, on a clean microfiber cloth. Set the watch assembly aside in a safe place.
-
4
Dip the head of a small paintbrush into your container of naphtha. Apply the naphtha to the dirtied, grimy areas of the watch bezel.
-
5
Wrap a medical gauze pad around your finger and dab up the loosened dirt and grime. Alternate between naphtha application and dabbing with the gauze until the bezel is completely clean.
-
6
Hold the tip of an air blower roughly 4 inches from the bezel and dispense short bursts of air to remove any dust particles that may have accumulated during cleaning.
-
7
Fit the casing over the top of the watch and gently snap it back into place.
