Adding Meta Tags to Flash Movies

Meta tags, also referred to as "metadata" and "ID tags," are used to label audio and video files with identifying information, such as genre or year of copyright. Because Flash movies are often embedded in web pages, their meta tags are frequently lost in the download process. If you have a Flash movie that's missing meta tags, there are several programs you can use to re-tag your movies.

Instructions

  1. VLC Media Player

    • 1

Download and install a free copy of VLC Media Player to add meta tags to your Flash movies (see Resources). Select the "Open File" option from VLC Media Player's "Media" heading to import your Flash movie into the program.

    • 2

Click on VLC Media Player's "Tools" heading, and then select its "Media Information" option. Fill your metadata into the fields, such as "Date" and "Artist," inside of the Media Information menu.

    • 3

Click on the "Save Metadata" button at the bottom of the Media Information menu to save your meta tags to your Flash movie.

    FLV Editor Lite

    • 4

Download and install a free copy of FLV Editor Lite to add metadata to your Flash movies (see Resources). Launch the program. Select the "FLV" option from the FLV Editor Lite's "Import" heading to load your FLV file into the program.

    • 5

Click on the "MetaData" button above the program's timeline window. Right-click inside of the "MetaData Information" heading, and then select the "Add Data" option to begin adding your first tag.

    • 6

Type a heading, such as "year" or "producer" into the "Name" field in the menu box that appears. Type the corresponding ID information into the "Value" field -- click "OK." Return to the "Add Data" option to add more tags.

    • 7

Select the "FLV" option from the "Export" heading to save your Flash movie and its metadata.

    Any FLV Player

    • 8

Use Any FLV Player to add meta tags to your Flash movies (see Resources). Download the program, install it, and then launch it.

    • 9

Drag and drop your FLV file into Any FLV Player's "Playlist" window. Click on the file in the playlist, and then click on the "Edit" button inside of the window.

    • 10

Type meta tag labels and values into the "Description" field, when the "Video Properties" menu appears. Click "OK" to apply your tags to your video.
