Purchase the right shade of red to match your hair. This can be tricky since you are going off of a photo on the front of the box. Ask the salesperson for assistance in determining the right color.

Put rubber gloves on your hands and open the bottle of hair color. Many men’s hair color products come pre-mixed; however, some may require that you combine the enclosed color with the conditioner or toner that is provided. This usually entails simply pouring one bottle into the other and shaking it. Follow the package directions for your specific product.

Place a towel around your shoulder to catch any hair color that may drip off your head. Squeeze the color onto your hair and comb through to ensure that it is evenly distributed.

Leave the color on for five to 10 minutes depending on the product’s instructions. Rinse with warm water and then shampoo and condition as normal.

Choose hair color that has been made for men, if possible. Women’s hair color will most likely work on your hair, and there are many more shades to choose from, however men’s hair color has been tested for men and women’s tested for women.
Decide if you want to use direct dyes, semi-permanent color or permanent color. Direct dyes only last for about six to 10 shampoos, and they are useful if you are trying out different colors. Semi-permanent hair color lasts for approximately two to three weeks. Permanent hair color is just as its name implies, permanent. Only use permanent color when you are sure you have the right color.
