Troubleshooting a Maytag Fridge With Water Leaking Underneath

Save

Warm air inside the refrigerator is condensed and turned into cold air. Water is drawn from the air during this process. In a Maytag refrigerator, this water is sent down the drain in the back of the fridge and sent to the drain tray at the bottom of the fridge near the compressor unit. If the drain is clogged, water may leak from the bottom of the unit. Also, in the case of a Maytag side-by-side refrigerator, the water line for the cold water dispenser may leak.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Spirit level
  • Quarters
  • Screwdriver
  • Bleach
  • Water
  • Turkey baster
  • Pull the fridge out from the wall.

  • Locate the water supply line entering the unit. Inspect all the compression nuts for signs of leaks. Tighten the compression nuts using a wrench, turning the nut clockwise to tighten.

  • Place three quarters on top of the fridge, towards the back of the unit. Place the end of a spirit level on top of the quarters, with the other end facing towards the front of the unit. Check that the fridge is level. If not, move to the next step.

  • Pull forward on the kick plate at the bottom of the fridge. Insert a screwdriver into the foot adjustment holes at the left and right side and turn the screwdriver to adjust the feet.

  • Locate the drain tray in the back of the unit, near the compressor motor. Lift the drip tray out of the unit and pour all the water into the sink. Clean out the tray with an equal mixture of bleach and water.

  • Open up the freezer. Remove the screws holding the back cover in place. Pull off the back cover.

  • Fill a turkey baster with equal amount bleach and water. Squirt the mixture into the drain hole at the back of the freezer. Reassemble the unit.
