DIY Stairway Garland

Decorate the railing of your stairs for a holiday or special occasion using basic craft techniques and supplies. A garland can be customized with literally any style or color you want, such as using bright tulips for a Spring garland, vines and handmade fabric flowers for an everyday garland or paper flowers for a more inexpensive garland choice. Once you have chosen the desired occasion for the garland, it is easy to assemble an inexpensive one in most cases.

Instructions

    • 1

Find or purchase a garland for the base of the stairway garland. Craft stores sell them in varied lengths, with 6 feet being the average length. Measure your stairway railing and purchase garland that is a combined total of about one and a half to two times the length of your railing.

    • 2

Connect the different garlands together if you were not able to find one garland of the length you need. To connect them, simply attach the ends together with floral wire twisted several times for a secure hold.

    • 3

If you plan to have a lighted garland, first attach your twinkle-light strands. Start by attaching one end of the string of lights to one end of your garland with twisted floral wire. Wrap the light string in a spiral along the length of the garland, securing it about every foot with floral wire.

Prepare your silk flowers by cutting the length of the stems to the desired length. You can attach the flowers to the garland by either wrapping the stems around the garland and securing with floral wire or by pulling off the stems and attaching just the flower portion to the garland with floral tape.

    • 5

Add any remaining accents to your garland such as berries, pine cones or feathers using either floral tape or floral wire. The garland can be attached to your banister using the floral wire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when cutting the floral wire, as it can have sharp edges.
