How to Make a Tub Hamster Cage
Hamster cages do not have to be complex structures. The main consideration is that they have enough floor space to accommodate all toys and furniture while also providing plenty of space to move around. You can build a simple cage out of a large tub, as long as you create a lockable lid for it and make sure it is open enough for adequate airflow.

Set up the tub. The tub you use should be at least 12 inches long by 8 inches wide by 8 inches tall, and should come with a lid. You can use see-through or opaque plastic. Drill three or four small holes in the sides of the tub, about two inches from the top edge. These will help provide airflow.

Create a proper lid. Take the lid that came with the tub and drill six rows of holes in it, with four holes per row. Space them out equally across the length of the lid. Like the holes in the sides of the tub, these will help create proper airflow for the hamsters. Make sure the lid snaps on tight to the tub when closed. If it is loose or doesn't snap on both ends, you need to obtain separate cage locks to make sure it is secure when closed.

Put in furnishings and toys. Lay down 1 1/2 inches of bedding on the floor of the cage. Attach a water bottle with a suction cup holder to one side. Provide an exercise wheel, hide boxes, tunnels and any other toys you can think of to keep your hamster active. Also include a food dish.

Tips & Warnings
You can create a more open lid by cutting out a square in the center and attaching wire mesh to it. Make sure the mesh has openings no larger than 1/4 inch, or the hamster may find a way to use it to escape.
If it becomes very hot in the area where your hamster tub sits, you should take the lid off entirely to make sure enough air is moving within it and the hamster is not getting overheated. Be sure that you are able to keep an eye on it during this time so it can't escape or be attacked by other household pets.
