Elephants used in Indian weddings are a symbol of good luck.

During an Indian wedding, an elephant sometimes transports the groom to the wedding location. This occurs during the baratt, or wedding procession. The elephant is a symbol of good luck and many in the Indian culture believe that elephants bring prosperity and joy to the newlyweds. However, decorating the elephant for an Indian wedding can vary from the elaborate to something quite simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a blanket or cloth that you like to lie over the top of the elephant. Usually, the blanket is long enough to hang over the sides and cover the elephant. Almost any pattern or color is appropriate, and it is entirely up to the bride and groom to decide if they want the blanket to match the theme of the wedding, or if they want to go in a different direction.

    • 2

Place an appropriate saddle on top of the blanket. The groom rides in the saddle on the elephant’s back. There are several different saddles to choose from, including a simple saddle to a more elaborate bench.

    • 3

Choose a headpiece for the elephant to wear. A headpiece is not necessary, but can make the elephant appear more complete. For example, the bride and groom can choose a headpiece that matches the elephant’s blanket.

    • 4

Decorate the elephant with flowers. While not necessary, couples have the option of attaching flowers to the elephant’s headpiece or blanket. However, decorating the elephant with the same flowers used in the wedding will create continuity between the processional and the wedding ceremony.
