Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a piece of brown construction paper around a paper towel roll. Mark where the end of the paper meets itself. Cut the paper so there is about half an inch of overlap.

    • 2

Mark the center of the construction paper. Draw a vertical line down the construction paper with your pencil. This is where the front of your totem pole will be.

    • 3

Divide the construction paper into four or five horizontal segments. Each segment will depict a different animal.

    • 4

Draw your animal faces or figures with your pencil in the segments of your construction paper. As you draw, hold the construction paper against the paper towel roll to see how it will look.

    • 5

Go over the pencil lines of your animals with a black marker to make them more visible. If you have any birds, cut out wings to add to your totem pole, if desired.

    • 6

Glue your construction paper to the paper towel roll. Allow the glue to dry completely. Add wings to your birds, if desired.

    • 7

Cut two slots in the top of the totem pole with your craft knife. These slots can be used to hold a name card in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the segments of your totem pole to tell a story.

  • For a smaller totem pole, use toilet paper rolls.
