Transform old handkerchiefs from something useful into a fabulous new scarf.

Those old handkerchiefs have been collecting dust in the attic for years. Transform them into something new to give new life to these pretty accessories. The different patterns, colors and textures of the handkerchiefs make a beautiful-looking scarf. Create the new scarf for yourself for a fashion accessory that gets some attention, or make a handkerchief scarf for a special friend or family member's birthday gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay about six vintage handkerchiefs on a clean, flat work surface. Each handkerchief should be the same size. If they are different sizes, find the smallest one and cut each of the handkerchiefs to the same size.

    • 2

Fold one of the handkerchiefs in half with the wrong-side out and sew a running stitch as close to the edge as possible. Flip the handkerchief right-side out through one of the open ends. Repeat with each handkerchief.

    • 3

Fold one open end of one of the handkerchiefs inward, about 1/4 inch at most.

    • 4

Slide the open end of another handkerchief into the folded end and pin it in place, all the way around. Do not flatten the handkerchief and pin through all layers. The handkerchiefs should make a long tube.

    • 5

Sew a straight stitch around the pinned edges.

    • 6

Fold the remaining open end of the second handkerchief inward about 1/4 inch and slide the open end of another handkerchief inside. Pin and sew the two handkerchiefs together in the same manner to increase the length of the scarf.

    • 7

Continue to add more handkerchiefs to the scarf in the same manner until it reaches the length you like. The ends of the scarf should already be finished because they are the handkerchief's edges. If the edges are unfinished, fold over 1/8 inch of fabric along each end. Press flat and then fold over another 1/8 inch. Sew a wide zigzag stitch around the fold to give the scarf delicate rolled edges.
