Instructions for How to Intersect Circles on a Kite

Instructions for How to Intersect Circles on a Kite thumbnail
A compass constructs perfect circles.

A kite is a polygon whose two pairs of adjacent sides each share a length. The kite is symmetrical across a single axis and has diagonals that intersect at right angles. The most common method for constructing the shape therefore involves using a protractor to measure the angles of the lines you draw. Yet you can also draw a kite using only a compass and a ruler. All points on a circle’s circumference are equidistant from its center, so the shape that connects the circles’ intersection and center points satisfies a kite’s properties.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the compass's jaws to the length you want for the kite's longer sides.

    • 2

Place the compass's spike on the paper, and rotate its other arm to draw the first circle.

    • 3

Tighten the compass's jaws to the length you want for the kite's shorter sides.

    • 4

Place the compass's spike outside of the circle that you have drawn but close enough so that its other arm can cross the circle twice. Draw the second circle.

    • 5

Draw lines connecting the first circle's center point to each of the points of intersection of the two circles.

    • 6

Draw lines connecting the second circle's center point to those same points of intersection. The quadrilateral you have constructed is a kite.
