Word allows you to be creative with photos, borders and shapes.

Circling a cropped photo in your Microsoft Word document is one of many ways you can customize your circle by defining the shape, size, border color and fill color. Placing a circle around your cropped photo highlights the image by bringing attention to it. It also creates a customized border to surround the photo. Use Word's built-in tools to customize your document with images and shapes.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Microsoft Word document that contains your cropped photo. If your cropped photo is not in an existing Word document, click on the "File" tab of the Ribbon, select "New" and click "Blank Document." Click the "Insert" tab of the Ribbon, select "Picture" and choose the file from your computer.

    • 2

Select the "Insert" tab of the Ribbon. Click the "Shapes" drop-down box and select the "Oval" button from the Basic Shapes area. Ovals create ovals and circles, depending on how you draw the shape.

    • 3

Click and hold your cursor over the top left-hand corner of the cropped photo. Drag your cursor to the bottom right-hand corner of the photo. Release your cursor when you have encompassed the entire photo.

    • 4

Select the oval and click the "Shape Fill" button from the Format tab of the Ribbon. Select the "No Fill" button to make the center of your oval transparent. Click the "Shape Outline" button and select the color of the circle outline.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your circle doesn't stay on top of the photo, right-click the circle border. Click the "Wrap Text" button and select "In Front of Text" from the available options.

  • Create a perfect circle by pressing and holding the "Shift" key while you drag the oval tool over your cropped photo.
