How to Change the Accelerator on a Compaq FS7555
The Compaq FS755 is a CRT monitor, once sold with several models of Compaq desktop computers. When the display images begin to have problems or you can't seem to play games because the video and images no longer display correctly, you can correct the problem by installing a PCI video accelerator card. However, this card is not installed to the monitor, but is instead installed in the computer tower box to which the monitor is connected via cables.

1
Choose a standard PCI video card with 128 megabytes (MB) to 256MB of video memory. Although there are cards with larger amounts of memory, you can't use these with the Compaq FS7555 as the computer technology used with this PC is older and the computer won’t be able to read the large video card.

2
Follow the cable on the back of the monitor that leads to the PC tower. Disconnect all the cables from the tower and move it to a workspace where you can easily maneuver the box.

3
Turn the tower case around so the back is facing you and remove the screws holding the right side panel. Remove all the screws holding the case if the entire panel must come off to reveal the inside of the computer. Slide the panel toward you and off the computer.
-
4
Lay the tower down so you can see the inside motherboard lying flat against your work table. Locate a PCI slot toward the center of the motherboard next to the computer tower back plate. These look like 6-inch thin slots.
-
5
Look at the inside of the computer back plate next to the slot you intend to use. Remove any screw that may hold a small metal cover to the back plate. Push the metal cover next to the slot inward from the outside of the case, if there is no screw. The panel will push inward and, with a little wiggling, will come off the back plate.
-
6
Position the video card over the PCI slot and firmly insert it pressing down along the upper edge of the card until it snaps into place. The back port should fit through the opening left by the back plate cover. Fasten the card to the back plate using the screw that came packaged with the video accelerator. The card should now sit perpendicular to the motherboard.
-
7
Replace the computer cover and screws. Reconnect the computer cables and connect the monitor cable to the VGA port on the card you installed.
-
8
Turn on the computer and monitor. Insert the disk that came with the video accelerator in the CD/DVD tray of the computer. Wait for the installation wizard to start automatically and follow the prompts to install the new video drivers. Use the computer as you normally do.
