Hang your makeup brushes upside down to dry to prolong their life.

A good makeup brush ensures the best application of your makeup but over time absorbs bacteria, oil and product, which can lead to break outs and clogged pores. Cleaning your brushes on a regular basis limits bacteria growth and lengthens their life cycle. You should always hang your makeup brushes upside down to dry to prevent water from seeping into the wooden handle, which can lead to rotting and mold formation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a paper cup up with warm water and a mild soap, such as liquid hand soap or baby shampoo.

    • 2

Swirl your makeup brush in the water for approximately 30 seconds.

    • 3

Run the brush under warm water until the water runs clear to ensure you've removed any soap residue.

    • 4

Apply conditioner to the brushes. Keep in mind that your brushes are made of hair and conditioning benefits them the same way it benefits your real hair. Leave the conditioner on for 2 to 3 minutes, then rinse with cold water to tighten the fibers.

    • 5

Squeeze excess water out with your fingers and a paper towel. Then pull the fibers apart to reshape the brush.

    • 6

Turn a paper cup upside down and cut a small hole in the bottom. Make it large enough to fit the handle of the brush, but not too large that the brush falls through. Insert the brush in the hole upside down and allow to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your brushes at least once a week, especially if you apply makeup on a daily basis.

  • Getting water into the handle can also eat away at the glue holding the bristles to the brush and cause the handle to expand.
