How to Use Pattern Wire

Pattern wire comes in a variety of styles and is primarily used in jewelry making. Such items as jewelry and necklaces are often made from this decorative wire. It's lightweight and pliable much like round wire. It also holds its shape. For that reason, clasps are often not needed but can be added if desired. Making items from this material is quick and simple. A beginning jewelry maker would have no problem completing this project in a short amount of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the body part you want to create the pattern wire piece with loosely with a tape measure. Place the tape measure around the body part in the same manner you would like the jewelry to fit. The jewelry shouldn't fit too snugly but not so loose that it falls off.

    • 2

Trim a piece of pattern wire equal to the measurement in the previous step. Use metal cutters or heavy duty scissors to make the cut. Make the cut square with the end of the metal so that both corners are 90 degrees in relation to the longer sides of the wire. This allows for the piece of jewelry to come together in a full circle with a clean closure. This also makes attaching your choice of fastener easier if you choose to use one.

    • 3

Bend the pattern wire into a circular shape with your hands or pliers. Pliers are best if the pattern wire is too heavy or thick to bend with just your hands. Place one end of the wire in a vice during the bending process if you find that you need to use both hands. Use the wearer's neck, wrist, ankle or other part for which the piece is made as a guide for bending the wire. Use another cylindrical piece as a guide as long as it's similar in size to the body part on which the jewelry is to be worn.
