How to Decorate Cookies to Look Like Basketballs

Ordinary rolled cookies can be made extra special by adding icing to them. When you have a special event planned, such as a basketball watch party or a birthday party for an avid basketball fan, decorating cookies to look like basketballs will give your cookies a unique flair. Using a rolled cookie dough as your base allows you to cut out the cookies into perfectly round shapes. Add a little orange and blacking icing and you've got a homemade themed dessert.

Things You'll Need

  • Rolling pin
  • Round cookie or biscuit cutter
  • Bowls
  • Confectioners' sugar
  • Milk
  • Light corn syrup
  • Vanilla extract
  • Electric hand mixer
  • Food coloring
  • Spatula
  • Offset spatula or table knife
  • Pastry bag
  • Round decorating tip
  • Make your favorite batch of rolled cookie dough, such as sugar or shortbread. Roll out the dough to a thin layer, approximately 1/4-inch thick, with a rolling pin. Use a cookie or biscuit cutter (or large glass) to cut perfectly round cookies. Bake the cookies as directed by your recipe and allow them to cool.

  • In a large bowl, add 2 cups of confectioners' sugar, 4 teaspoons of milk, 4 teaspoons of light corn syrup and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix well using an electric hand mixer set to medium speed. Mix for a few minutes until an icing sets up.

  • Separate the icing into two bowls using a spatula. Place three-fourths of the icing in one bowl and the remaining icing in another. Add a few drops of orange food coloring to the larger amount of icing and mix well. Keep adding orange food coloring until you achieve the right color orange to resemble a basketball.

  • Add a few drops of black food coloring to the smaller amount of icing. Continue adding black food coloring until the icing turns completely black after blending.

  • Use a small offset spatula or table knife to ice the cookies completely with orange icing. Take the tip of the table knife and remove a thin line of icing in the middle of the cookie. Rotate the cookie 90 degrees and remove another line of icing (forming a cross on the cookie). Remove a line of icing on each side of the cookie (in the shape of a semicircle), leaving uniced spaces to create the seams of the basketball.

  • Fill a pastry bag equipped with a small round decorating tip with the black icing. Roll down the top of the bag to remove any air. Pipe black lines onto the cookie in the areas where you scraped the icing away to represent the seams of the basketball. Repeat for all remaining cookies.
