How to Get Promoted on YouTube

YouTube offers its users an advertising tool known as Promoted Videos that serves the same purpose as TV commercials. You create a video with information that attracts viewers to you, your business, organization, product or service. You then pay YouTube from a promotional budget to display the video on areas of the site that have content similar to the content in your video. YouTube users will see a thumbnail link to your video while viewing similar content or will find the video when performing certain keyword searches.

Instructions

    • 1

Create the promotional video you want to present as your ad on YouTube.

    • 2

Go to the Google Accounts "Create an Account" page and set up an account. If you already have a Google account skip this step.

    • 3

Go to the YouTube Promoted Videos page and click the “Get Started” button.

    • 4

Set up account billing and agree to the Google Inc. Advertising Program Terms, Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. When finished click the “Add billing!” button

    • 5

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the set up process. This process includes setting up a daily budget amount and linking your Google and YouTube accounts. You will also upload your video, select a video thumbnail image and select keywords, also known as tags, to link YouTube visitors to your video when they perform certain keyword searches.

Track the success of your video using YouTube’s Insight. With this tool you can see a wide variety of statistical information including the popularity of your video, the way in which YouTube users discovered it, the demographics of those who watched it, the number of times users commented or rated the video and the places in the video where users stopped watching.

Tips & Warnings

  • The daily budget amount is the maximum you’re willing to spend on your advertising a day. When someone clicks and watches your video a fee comes out of the budget. When the amount set aside for the day is spent YouTube stops showing the video until the next day.

  • Google charges an activation fee if you set up an AdWords at the same time as the Promoted Videos feature.
