How to Make a Spaghnum Moss Wreath
Sphagnum moss wreaths are used as a base form for living wreaths. Live flowers, greenery cuttings and succulents are planted into the sphagnum moss wreath and left to grow. The moss will capture and retain water for the plants to utilize while growing. You can create your own sphagnum moss wreath using a wire living-wreath form, sheets of dried sphagnum moss and potting soil. Display your wreath outdoors on a door's exterior, fence or porch.

- 3 lbs. sphagnum moss in sheets

1
Fill a large bucket half full of water. Cut 3 lbs. of sphagnum moss sheets into strips 4 to 5 inches wide with a pair of scissors. Place the strips in the bucket and push them under the surface of the water.

2
Lay a 12-inch living wreath wire form flat on a work surface. Position the wreath form so the front side is facing upwards. Pull a few strips of moss from the bucket of water and wring them out. Layer the strips inside the wire frame around the back and sides. Continue to add strips of moss until the back and sides are covered with a layer 1 to 2 inches thick.

3
Put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands. Pour potting soil into the wreath form on top of the layer of moss. Fill the core of the wreath with potting soil. Pat the soil down with your hands to compact it.
-
4
Add more strips of moss on top of the potting soil. Tuck the moss strips under the front wires of the wreath frame. Continue to add moss until the wreath form is packed full and the potting soil is completely covered.
-
5
Tie an end of a spool of floral wire to the top of the wreath frame. Wrap the wire around the sides of the wreath in a spiral pattern until you reach the top of the wreath again. Cut the floral wire with a pair of wire cutters and tie the end to the wire frame.
-
6
Decorate your wreath by planting flowers, succulents or greenery cuttings into your wreath form. Tuck the root balls or cutting ends through the moss and into the soil. Hang your wreath up once all plants have been inserted into the wreath.
