How to Force a Spider Crawl on a WordPress Blog

A spider is a term for a tool that a search engine, such as Google, uses to crawl a website and add new pages to the listings. You can install a sitemap plugin on your WordPress blog that will automatically archive all of your posts and pages into a sitemap file made specifically for search engines. The plugin will also automatically send the sitemap to search engines, which will cause the search engine spiders to crawl your blog.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your WordPress blog, click “Plugins” from the menu, then click “Add New.”

    • 2

Type “Google XML Sitemaps” in the search box and press the “Enter” key on your keyboard to search for the plugin.

    • 3

Click “Install Now” under “Google XML Sitemaps,” then activate the plugin when the installation is complete.

    • 4

Click “Settings,” then click “XML Sitemap” from the left menu to go to your sitemap settings. By default, the notify settings for Google, Bing and Ask.com will be enabled from the “Basic Settings” options. This will automatically submit your WordPress sitemap to the search engines.

    • 5

Click the “Rebuild Sitemap” link and allow the plugin to create your sitemap for the first time. It will automatically include all of the posts and pages in your WordPress blog and send the sitemap to the search engines. This will give the search engine spiders a map to follow and cause them to crawl all the areas provided by your sitemap.

Tips & Warnings

  • The sitemap will automatically make new changes and alert the search engines as you post content to your WordPress blog.
