Create a blue hair conditioner using dried hollyhock flowers.

People with silver or gray hair experience two common problems. First, the hormonal change that causes gray hair also reduces the natural oils that moisturize your hair. Second, gray hair dulls and turns yellow when exposed to hair products and sunlight. In order to restore the silvery shine and bounce to your hair, apply a blue hair conditioner that counteracts the yellow and provide the hair with the moisture it needs. If you prefer the natural approach to hair care, you can make your own blue conditioner. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Making Blue Conditioner

    • 1

Add 1/2 cup of dried hollyhock flowers to an 8-oz glass jar and fill the jar with olive oil. Olive oil is a natural conditioner suitable for all hair types.

    • 2

Close the lid tightly and set the jar on a sunny windowsill for two weeks.

    • 3

Line a funnel with cheesecloth and strain the oil into a dark glass bottle. Do not use a plastic bottle. The dye from the hollyhock flowers will discolor the bottle.

    Using the Conditioner

    • 4

Wash your hair with a residue-free shampoo.

    • 5

Apply 2 tbsp. of the blue conditioner to your hair and comb it through your hair to distribute it evenly.

    • 6

Allow the conditioner to sit for three minutes.

    • 7

Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. Finish your rinse with a shot of cold water to seal the hair cuticles and add shine.

    • 8

Repeat the process once a month or when your hair begins to look yellow. Daily or weekly applications will cause your hair to turn blue.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the conditioner gives your hair a bluish caste after one use, wash your hair and rinse it with a 50/50 solution of water and apple cider vinegar. Dilute the conditioner with olive oil

  • Do not use the blue conditioner as a hot oil treatment. The heat will cause the blue pigment to penetrate the hair shaft, resulting in an intense, semi-permanent blue color.
