How to Make Bullet Points in Illustrator CS5

Make bullet points in Adobe Illustrator with your keyboard and a combination of keys. Type an ALT code to insert bullets at the beginning of each listed item. Adding Alt code bullets to your lists enables trouble-free text editing as the size of the bullet will match any font style or size changes you make. These bullets will also move with the contents of your list should you need to alter the space between a list's items.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the Type tool and click as you drag it diagonally across the canvas to create a text box.

    • 2

Type the list items into the text box and add or omit spaces between these list items. You may want to omit double spaces between list items if your list consists of information that fits on a single line. Otherwise, add an extra space by pressing the Return key after paragraph length list entries.

    • 3

Place the Type tool cursor in front of the list item. Then, add a bullet ALT code. Press the "Number Lock" key then hold the "ALT" key down as you press the "7" on your numerical keypad. A bullet point should appear at the beginning of your first list item. Add two spaces by pressing your keyboard's Space bar twice. The bullet point should now have some breathing room before the text within the list item begins.

    • 4

Select the bullet point and the two spaces with the Type tool. Then, select "Edit" and "Copy."

    • 5

Move the Type tool cursor in front of the second list item. Click "Edit" and "Paste" to place the copied bullet and its extra space in front this list item. Repeat pasting this bullet and its spaces before the beginning of the remaining list items.

    • 6

Adjust the line-spacing of the list after each bullet is in place. Choose "Window" and "Type" and "Paragraph" to view Adobe Illustrator's Paragraph panel. Within this panel you can adjust the spaces between your list items as necessary -- increasing the "Space After Paragraph" value may add visual appeal a bullet point list, depending on your font selection and its size.
