DIY Kindle Sleeve

The Kindle is an electronic reading device manufactured by Amazon. The Kindle allows readers to purchase and download digital copies of books and read them on the go. Kindle models are lightweight and feature a special screen that is easier on the eyes and viewable in bright light conditions. Kindles are not sold with cases. Make your own protective Kindle case using decorative fabric and a foam padding. Because the dimensions of the Kindle models vary, the amount of fabric you'll need will depend on the model.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a fabric measuring tape to measure the length and width of your Kindle. Add 1 inch to both the length and width to account for the padding. Sketch a pattern on card stock using a ruler to create a rectangle following the expanded Kindle measurements.

    • 2

Sketch an identical rectangle on another piece of card stock. Extend the top of this rectangle 3 inches higher but the same width as the rectangle. Note that this extra section will become the closure flap. Cut out both card stock patterns.

    • 3

Measure a rectangle of 1/2-inch thick foam padding that is 3/4-inch smaller than the original Kindle measurements on both length and width. Cut out the foam rectangle using a craft knife. Repeat to form a second foam rectangle. Set both foam rectangles aside.

    • 4

Place the card stock pattern with the flap on the underside of the fabric you want to use for the exterior. Cut the fabric in the shape and size of the pattern, cutting slowly to keep the edges smooth and even. Cut a second rectangle out of the exterior fabric using the smaller card stock pattern.

    • 5

Cut two rectangles from the lining fabric using the smaller card stock pattern. Set aside the patterns.

    • 6

Create the back of the Kindle sleeve. Place the larger piece of exterior fabric flat on the table, pattern side facing up. Stack on a rectangle of the lining fabric, right-side facing down. Pin the fabric together. Use your sewing machine to stitch together the sides and bottoms of the fabrics but not the top. Make the stitch 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric to create the seam when it's reversed. Turn the fabric pocket inside out, so that the exterior fabric is on the outside with the pattern facing out as it should be.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 to create the front of the case. Note that there isn't a flap on the exterior fabric of this section, so the lining and exterior rectangles are the same size.

    • 8

Place the front and back sections of the sleeve together so the exterior patterns are touching in the middle, with the lining fabrics facing out. Pin into place and sew the perimeter to connect. Keep the top sections of the fabrics open. Turn the sleeve inside out so that the exterior fabric is correctly back on the outside.

    • 9

Slide the foam rectangles into the openings in the fabric. Sew the top sections closed carefully, making sure not to hit the needle into the foam.

    • 10

Remove the protective backing from two strips of a stick-on hook and loop fastener. Stick one strip near the top of the exterior fabric flap and the other on the front of the exterior fabric, near the top. Insert the Kindle and connect the hook and loop fastener segments to close.
