Bracing Closet Shelves

Closet shelves bear a lot of weight from books, clothing, and heavier objects like bowling balls and other sports equipment; over time the shelves are bound to sag. To eliminate shelf sagging, brace your shelves with supports. The shelving will hold up more stuff and therefore allow for more storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all objects from the shelf, and place them aside for now.

    • 2

Push up on the shelf until the edge of the shelf is perfectly level. Hold a carpenter's level along the width of the shelf to verify that it is level.

    • 3

Insert the shelf brace support into the wire shelving and hook the end over the edge of the shelf. Place the other end against the wall. Mark through the mounting holes with a pencil. Or, if you have wood shelves, place a wooden or metal angle bracket under the shelf and mark through the bracket's mounting holes with a pencil.

    • 4

Drill holes at the marks you made with a ¼-inch drill bit and power drill. Insert drywall anchors into the hole and tap them into place with a hammer.

    • 5

Set the bracket back into position so the mounting holes are over the anchors. Drive screws through the bracket mounting holes and into the anchors to secure the bracket and brace the shelf.
