How to Crochet a Half Beanie

Crochet hats are favored by young men and women alike.

Crocheting simple projects can be relaxing and produce thoughtful gifts or additional income. One such project is a fashionable half beanie worked in a spiral pattern beginning at the crown and composed entirely of double crochet stitches. The finished size is approximately 4.5 inches from brim to crown and approximately 7 inches in diameter.

Things You'll Need

• 3 oz. medium weight yarn
• Size F crochet hook
• 1 scrap piece of yarn in a contrasting color, 3 inches

1. Check your gauge by crocheting a 3-inch swatch of single crochet stitches in eight rows. Create a chain of 18 stitches. Work single crochet, beginning with the second chain from the hook and continuing in each chain across. Chain once and turn. Crochet seven more rows of single crochet stitches, chaining once and turning at the end of each row. Finish off and measure. Seventeen stitches should equal 3 inches, while eight rows should equal 2 inches. Adjust your needle size if necessary and begin your project.

2. Chain five, creating a slip stitch in the fifth chain from the hook. Work 10 double crochets in the chain loop created, forming an evenly spaced circular pattern.

3. Place your marker, using the contrasting scrap yarn, to determine where each round begins. Work three double crochets in each stitch around, completing Round 2 and replacing your marker as you complete each subsequent round.

4. Create two double crochet stitches in the next stitch and one double crochet in the following stitch. Continue this pattern to complete Round 3.

5. Work two double crochet stitches in the next stitch and one double crochet in the next two stitches. Repeat this pattern, producing Round 4.

6. Complete Round 5 by working two double crochet stitches in the next stitch and one double crochet stitch in the next three stitches, repeating this pattern all the way around.

7. Produce two double crochet stitches in the next stitch and one double crochet stitch in next four stitches, repeating this pattern until the end of Round 6.

   Complete Rounds 7 through 15 by working one double crochet stitch in each stitch around. Finish off the project by weaving in all yarn ends.

Tips & Warnings

• Alter the size by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches in each round. You also can shorten or lengthen your beanie by adding or subtracting rounds.

• To create horizontal stripes, drop and add colors at the end of your chosen rounds.

• Keep your yarn tension steady throughout the project to create a consistent pattern.
