How to Make a Pretend Spider's Web
A fake spider's web, especially an oversized web, is right at home at a spooky party or as part of general outdoor Halloween decor. Rather than buying one, you can make your own from yarn and glue, making it as big as you'd like. This fake spider web can be used again and again, and you can tailor it to your liking — a full circular web or just a portion of a web to create creepy corner decor. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Wax paper
- White or gray yarn
- Scissors
- School glue
- Bowl
- Water
- Spoon or toothpick
- Rubber gloves
- Thumbtacks or tape
Instructions

1
Cover your work surface with wax paper, making the wax paper area a little larger than you'd like to make the spider web.
-
2
Cut four pieces of yarn 18 inches long, or however large you'd like the web to be, using scissors. Cut another piece 6 feet or so in length — the measurement need not be exact, but the piece must be long.

3
Squirt a few tablespoons of glue into a small bowl. Add the same amount of water to the glue; it needn't be exact but should be close. Stir the mixture gently with a spoon or toothpick.
-
4
Put on the rubber gloves. Drop the four similar strands of yarn into the glue mixture and let them sit in the bowl as you work. Pick up one of the strands, using one hand to hold the top of the yarn and the other to wipe off the excess glue along the length of the yarn. Set the yarn piece vertically on the wax paper.
-
5
Pick up another piece of yarn and remove the excess glue as you did in Step 4. Set this piece of yarn horizontally across the first, so the yarn looks like a plus sign.
-
6
Repeat the glue removal procedure with the next two pieces of yarn, setting them diagonally across the first two pieces of yarn, like an asterisk or spokes on a wheel.
-
7
Drop the long piece of yarn into the bowl, coating it with the glue mixture. Pull it out, removing as much excess glue as you can with your hands. Starting at the center of the yarn spokes, set the long piece of yarn down in a spiral pattern, moving out farther with each pass, to create a spider web design. After you've created the outer circle of the web, if there's any yarn left over, let it hang freely outside the web. Allow to dry completely.
-
8
Peel the spider web carefully from the waxed paper, starting in one corner and working your way around the web. Trim off the extra yarn, if any, or use the excess as a tab to hang part of the web. Attach the web wherever you desire, using thumbtacks or tape.

Tips & Warnings
To add a homemade spider to the web, craft a spider from small black pom poms and pipe cleaners. Connect the spider to the web by wrapping the ends of the pipe cleaner legs around the webbing.
Add some store-bought stretchy spider webbing to the area along with your yarn web to create more creepiness.
Paint the web with glow paint or luminescent paint for special effects, especially if a black light will be used near the web.
Rinse out the bowl and spoon right away after using to prevent the glue from drying on them.
