Have your kids put on a puppet show to activate their imaginations.

On a rainy day when your children are feeling cooped up and antsy, have them put on a puppet show to help them focus their energies and get their imaginations flowing. Have your kids dictate a script to you or even use a classic fable or story. As they act out an animal puppet show on a puppet stage or behind a couch, talents will emerge that you may not have expected.

Instructions

    • 1

Have your kids dictate a script to you or find an already-written story that they would like to use. The storyline can involve human situations even though the puppets are animals. Many classic fairy tales and fables have animals act as humans. You can use a story such as "Little Red Riding Hood" if you want to write out a script of simple dialogue.

Set up a puppet stage. If you already have a puppet stage, set it up in the living room or a room with seating so that the show can have an audience. If you don't have a puppet stage, pull the couch out from the wall far enough so your kids can fit behind it with their puppets. The top of the couch will act as the stage and you can set up seating on the other side of the room.

Help your kids decide who will play what character if they can't decide for themselves. Help them resolve any conflicts they may have over wanting to play the same role. If one child gets to play a main role, you can have another child play multiple supporting roles to make up for it.

Allow them time to practice their show. They can each read their parts aloud and act out their puppets as they please.

    • 5

Bring an audience to the puppet show. Invite neighbors or family friends if you can. If you don't have an audience, you can video tape the performance for your kids to watch at a later date.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you would like to make the task a little easier, puppet show scripts can be found on the Internet.
