How to Make a Ribbon Scarf With Interfacing

Next time you want to make a handmade scarf, put away your knitting needles and reach for some water-soluble interfacing. This craft supply has the ability to fuse to any fabric when you need it and dissolve away in water when you don't. Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of water-soluble interfacing to the size you want your scarf to be. Place one on a table with the fusible part sticking up.

    • 2

Cut ribbon of any width into pieces approximately 2 inches long. Arrange the pieces on the interfacing so they overlap and cover the entire piece.

    • 3

Place the second piece of interfacing on top with the fusible side facing down, and cover everything with a pressing cloth. Iron the ribbon to the two pieces of interfacing together according to the instructions on the interfacing package.

    • 4

Thread your sewing machine with a complementary thread color, and select a medium-length straight stitch. Sew a straight line down the length of the interfacing one-fourth inch from the edge, sewing over each piece of ribbon as you come to it. When you come to the end of the last piece of ribbon, turn the interfacing and sew back the other direction. Don't sew past the end of the ribbon. Continue in this manner, sewing one long continuous line back and forth until you have covered the entire piece of interfacing, sewing over every single piece of ribbon.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 going the opposite direction -- across the width of the interfacing.

    • 6

Remove the scarf from the sewing machine. Fill the sink or a bucket with water according to the instructions on the package, and soak the scarf until the interfacing dissolves away.

    • 7

Rinse the scarf and hang it up to dry.
