How to Generate a Header Graphic for the Web

How to Generate a Header Graphic for the Web thumbnail
You can make a web header graphic using almost any computer.

A header graphic is a rectangular graphic positioned at the top of a Web page. It generally contains or serves as the background for the title for the page, and may or may not also contain an image of some kind. It will set the tone for the mood of the page, as well as helping to inform the viewer what the page is about. You can create such a header on your computer with a little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine or decide the width of the header. This part depends on the software or template being used to create the page, and may or may not be under your control depending on how the rest of the page will be created. If you are using Web design software or a blogging platform to make the page, you can generally get the width from the software settings. The units will be pixels.

    • 2

Decide on the height of your header graphic. While the width may be predetermined, the height is generally up to you. Generally, anywhere from 50 pixels up to 300 is appropriate.

    • 3

Create a graphic of the width and height determined above, using the graphic software you have chosen.

    • 4

Use the Fill or Paint Can tool to fill the background of the graphic with a solid color or a gradient of your choice. Or, you can choose to open a photo of your choice and use that as a background.

    • 5

Add any other desired design elements to the background. These could be small photos, icons or shapes. Cut or copy them from another graphic and paste them into the header in the desired locations.

    • 6

Add text using the Text Tool. Click where you want to type, and select a font, size and color using the tool options. Type your text and preview it to be sure it fits in the header and that you are pleased with its appearance.

    • 7

Save the graphic as a PNG, Jpeg or GIF file.
