How to Change the Glow Bar Igniter on a General Electric Profile Oven That Does Not Work

General Electric gas ranges have two glow bars, also referred to as burners, located at the top and bottom of the oven compartment. The burners are the point of exit for the gas, which is ignited by the oven's electrodes. When gas is ignited, the flame is contained to the surface of the glow bar, for the duration of the cook time. The igniters are located very close to the burners in order to effectively ignite the gas. If either of the igniters fail to create a spark, which is not uncommon after regular use of the range, the gas will not ignite, and the burners will not light. To ensure that the burners always light when needed, replace the igniter at the first sign of malfunction. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the range's power supply, either by turning off the range breaker or unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Rotate the oven door's two hinge locks down toward the door and then close the door to the broil-stop position. Lift the door up and off of the range. Removing the door makes the components of the range more accessible.

    • 3

Remove the oven racks from the oven compartment.

    • 4

Remove the two thumb screws from the lower panel of the range, and then remove the lower panel. If replacing the broil igniter, which is located at the top of the range, skip this step.

    • 5

Remove the screws that secure the burner shield assembly to the range and remove it. The bottom burner shield assembly covers the burner. On some models, the broil burner shield is connected to the burner itself, and the burner pulls out of the range with the shield.

    • 6

Remove the mounting screws securing the igniter into position, and then pull the igniter away from the rear of the oven. The igniter wire harness pulls through the rear oven wall as the igniter is removed.

    • 7

Disconnect the igniter wire harness, and discard the old igniter.

    • 8

Connect the new igniter to the wire harness and secure it into position, using the screw that was removed.

    • 9

Reinstall the burner shield assembly and secure it using the screws that were removed.

    • 10

Replace the lower oven panel, if applicable to your installation.

    • 11

Replace the oven racks and reinstall the oven door.

    • 12

Close the oven door and restore the range's gas and power supply.
