How to Make Necktie Hairstyles

Scarves are often incorporated into hairstyles. Add an androgynous twist by using a man's necktie instead. Pay attention to the width of the tie in relation to the style you want to achieve. Thick ties, for example, won't work as well when braided into the hair. Keep it simple with pinstripe ties or solid colors, or select ties with bold colors and prints that look more like scarves. Instructions

  1. Tie Braid

    • 1

Divide hair into 3 even sections at the back of the head. Push the left and right sections forward to isolate the middle section. Use bobby pins to affix the slim end of a skinny tie 1 to 2 inches from the top of the middle section of hair.

    • 2

Braid your hair. Cross the first strand of hair over the top of the middle section to hide the bobby pins securing the tie. Hold the middle section tightly when crossing it over to keep the tie integrated into the braid.

    • 3

Stop braiding when you've reached the largest flared out portion near the bottom of the tie. Secure the hair and tie with a hair elastic. Pull the flared end of the tie forward to hide the elastic and any hair that may be hanging down.

    Tie Ponytail

    • 4

Form a high ponytail on the back of your head using a hair elastic. Thread a tie through the elastic so that the tie is on top of the ponytail. Pull it so that the small and large sections of the tie are evenly divided by the elastic.

    • 5

Wrap the skinny end of the tie around the hair elastic. Tuck the end into the the underside of the ponytail. Secure this section in place using bobby pins.

    • 6

Choose what you want to do with the larger section. Leave it hanging over the top of the ponytail if you have thick hair that will show on each side of the tie. Tuck it behind the ponytail if the tie is longer than your hair. Note that you can also tuck it to either side of the ponytail.
