How to Fix Matted Faux Hair on a Jacket Hood
With the change of seasons, people begin storing the clothing and outerwear that is no longer appropriate and start dragging out the potentially musty, unused items stored away the previous year. The stored items typically need some attention and care to make them wearable, especially winter clothing and coats with fur or faux hair. If the faux hair on your jacket hood is matted, you can repair the matted clumps in only a few steps. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Stool or chair
- Wide-tooth comb or hairbrush
- Hair oil or conditioner
- Water
- Blow dryer
- Clothes hanger
Instructions
-
Prepare
-
1
Detach the hood from the jacket if possible. This will avoid any further damage to the coat in the cleaning process of the hood, such as potential water spillage.
-
2
Pick out any dust or other particles from the hair on the hood. Do not touch the matted portion of the hair.
-
-
3
Place the hood on the stool or drape over the back of the chair.
-
4
Gather all other materials needed and place nearby to avoid long pauses between the steps.
-
5
Hand-brush the surrounding hair away from the matted hair to isolate the area as much as possible.
Detangle
-
6
Squeeze a small dot of hair conditioner, or pour a small drop of oil, onto your hand.
-
7
Coat the bristles of the brush, or the teeth of the comb, with the conditioner or oil.
-
8
Comb or brush the faux hair in small, quick strokes, starting with the ends. As the mat loosens, start further and further up on the hair, in small increments, until the matted area is fixed.
-
9
Wash the comb or brush and clean the oil or conditioner out of the faux hair using the wet brush or comb.
-
10
Reattach the hood to the jacket if necessary.
Dry
-
11
Place the jacket on a clothes hanger.
-
12
Adjust the hood so the faux hair portion is not touching the other parts of the jacket.
-
13
Plug in the blow dryer and turn it on to the lowest heat level.
-
14
Blow dry the faux hair in a slow and smooth sweeping motion. Do not hover in one spot too long as this can burn the hair.

Tips & Warnings
If your jacket's care instructions specify to avoid heat, hang your coat on a clothes hanger and forgo the blow dryer. Instead, hang the jacket in a cool and dry place.
Do not hang the wet jacket in small enclosed spaces such as closets or damp places such as a bathroom in which a shower is used. This can cause mold to develop on the jacket.
