How to Make a Pompom out of Ribbon and a Styrofoam Ball
Make a pompom decoration with ribbon to hang from the ceiling or from your Christmas tree. To achieve a neat, round ribbon pompom, you will need to use a Styrofoam ball as a base. Making your own pompoms allows you to use any color of ribbon that will match the occasion, such as red and green for Christmas, or white for a wedding party decoration. Follow a simple procedure to make it possible to hang the pompoms.

1
Cut a piece of 26-gauge craft wire into a 2-inch length with wire cutters. Bring the two ends of the wire together and twist them together in a spiral until you have a 1/2-inch-long loop at the folded end.
-
2
Measure and cut to 1 foot in length a piece of the ribbon you want to use. Tie one end of the ribbon to the base of the loop in the wire where the two ends are twisted together.

3
Create a 1/2-inch-long loop in the ribbon and wrap the ribbon around the base of the wire loop to secure the ribbon loop. Hold the wire at the base of the loop between your fingers with one hand and continue creating the same loop until you have a bunch of loops on the wire.
-
4
Tie the loose end of the ribbon tightly to the base of the wire loop. Repeat this process about 30 times to make a series of ribbon bunches that cover a 2-inch-thick Styrofoam ball.
-
5
Coil the spiraled end of the wire around a wooden skewer to make a small round loop below the bunch of ribbon loops. Bend the coil to a 90-degree angle from the base of the group of ribbons.
-
6
Apply a nearly pea-sized amount of epoxy adhesive on the bottom of the loop you made on the spiraled end. Press the glued end to the surface of the 2-inch-thick Styrofoam ball. Repeat this process until the ball is covered with the ribbon bunches and the surface of the Styrofoam is no longer visible. Wait 24 hours for the glue to dry.
-
7
Coil a 1-inch-long piece of the craft wire around a pen to make a loop. Gently separate two of the bunches of ribbon on the pompom and place a pinhead-sized dab of hot glue at their base.
-
8
Grip the wire loop you just made in a pair of tweezers and press the other side of the loop to the glue so that the loops stand vertically. Hold the wire loop in place for two minutes to let the glue harden enough so that the loop stands on its own. Wait 30 minutes for the glue to harden completely.
-
9
Hang the pompom by running a string or ribbon through the hoop and tying together the ends of the string or ribbon.
